WHAT IS AN IPL DEVICE?

The “IPL” or Intense Pulsed Light device is an advanced broad spectrum light source that is applied over the skin to treat a variety of blemishes. IPL energy can improve the appearance of unwanted facial wrinkles, pigmentation, freckles, stretch marks, and blood vessels. Energy is gently and precisely delivered to the skin in such a way that normal surrounding tissue is not adversely affected. In addition, this procedure has “little or no downtime” associated with it- meaning that patients can go to work and resume their normal daily lifestyle within a matter of hours.

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF THIS TYPE OF SKIN TREATMENT

In the past, the only laser that was effective for wrinkle reduction was the CO2 carbon dioxide laser (an ablative laser). This treatment requires 10 days of healing and causes some discomfort for the patient. Recent research has shown that one only has to gently stimulate the superficial portion of the skin to achieve an effective cosmetic result. Without the need for intensive peeling or general anesthesia, the procedure is inherently safer.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SIDE EFFECTS FROM THE PROCEDURE?

After treatment, a mild sunburn like reaction may occur. If “ALA” is used (see PDT section), your skin may be photosensitive for 48 to 72 hours so it is important to stay out of the sun during this time. When treating skin growths or brown spots, redness and crusting can take 5 to 7 days to resolve.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?

On average, three to five treatment sessions are required every four to six weeks to achieve a response. Results can be further optimized with the use of neurotoxin or filler therapy.
