What Are Sun Spots?

Have you noticed patches of discolored skin around your body? These unsightly spots are known as age spots, or sun spots. The can form on areas of the skin that are frequently exposed to sunlight. Some of the areas where they commonly form are the hands, neck, shoulder, arms, and face.

Sun spots form due to effects of UV radiation on the skin. When the UV rays emitted by the sun make contact with the skin, they can stimulate the production of melanin, the pigment in the skin that gives it a darker color after suntanning. The melanin will form in oddly shaped spots around the skin, giving it an uneven and unappealing appearance.

At the Dermatology Institute for Skin Cancer and Cosmetic Surgery, we can provide you with a personalized solution to your sun spot issue. Dermatologist Dr. David Harvey has an advanced understanding of skin conditions and can provide you with the appropriate level of care. Contact us to schedule a consultation.
