The Different Types of Sties

A stye is a small and painful red bump that typically grows along the base of the upper or lower eyelashes. They form as a result of a bacterial infection. They may resemble pimples due to the presence of a white or yellowish spot that forms as pus accumulates.

There are two types of sties: external hordeolum and internal hordeolum. External hordeolum occur when one of the hair follicles along the base of the eyelashes becomes infected. Internal hordeolum grow inside the eyelid. They occur due to a bacterial infection of oil-producing glands located within the eyelids.
