Is Your Sunscreen Not Working?

Follow these tips to get the most out of your sunscreen:

Have you ever spent the day at the beach or the pool only to discover that you got burnt even after applying sunscreen? Every time your skin gets burned or tan, you have increased your risk for skin cancer.

Dr. Harvey recently teamed up with Piedmont Healthcare to offer some tips to help you get the most out of your sunscreen.  There are some simple things you can do to help protect your skin such as staying out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., wearing protective clothing and applying sunscreen at least every two hours.

8 Great Tips to Keep Your Safe in the Sun

SEEK SHADE – The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

USE CLOTHING -Wear protective clothing, such as a hats or long sleeves.

WEAR SPF – Generously apply a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Broad-spectrum sunscreen provides protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

REMEMBER SUNSCREEN ON CLOUDY DAYS – Use sunscreen outside, even on cloudy days.

USE THE 2 HOUR RULE – Reapply sunscreen every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

WATCH FOR REFLECTIONS – Use extra caution near water, snow and sand. These areas often reflect the damaging rays of the sun.

JUST SAY NO TO TANS – Avoid tanning beds.

CHECK YOUR SKIN OFTEN – Check your skin every month and see your dermatologist for a skin check at least once a year!
