How Do Stretch Marks Form?

February 9th, 2017
By Dermatology Institute

Stretch marks form when the dermis, the second layer of our skin from the surface, is torn. This can cause linear marks to form on the body that often have a lighter and odd-colored hue compared to the rest of the skin on our bodies. These marks can give the skin an unappealing texture and appearance.

The dermis can be ruptured in multiple ways, primarily through fluctuations in weight. Rapid weight change places the skin under great strain. If the skin is not given the proper amount of time to heal and stretch, tears can occur, which will form stretch marks. Stretch marks can occur anywhere on the body.

Dermatologist Dr. David Harvey can provide various treatments to reduce the presence of your stretch marks so that your skin looks beautiful and natural again. Contact us to schedule a consultation.
